Guard against tooth decay with a fluoride treatment

Fluoride is a mineral that helps prevent tooth decay by making your tooth more resistant to acid attacks from sugars, plaque, and bacteria. Fluoride is also able to stop the progress of early stages of tooth decay.

While you can get fluoride toothpaste and mouthwash to use at home, the fluoride treatments used in our dental practice is a much higher concentration and can provide lasting protection for your teeth.

What is involved in a fluoride treatment?

After your professional teeth cleaning, the fluoride varnish will be put on each tooth surface. To allow your teeth time to absorb the fluoride and for it to repair minor tooth decay we strongly recommend that you don’t rinse, drink or eat for at least 30 minutes after the fluoride treatment.

How often should I have a fluoride treatment?

We usually recommend a fluoride treatment every six to twelve months for optimal oral health. How frequently will depend on your oral health and how at risk you are of tooth decay. At your dental check up your dentist will recommend how regularly you should have a treatment.

Should my child have a fluoride treatment?

Yes, fluoride treatments are perfectly safe for children and can provide a much-needed protective barrier for their teeth. For added protection make sure they are using a fluoride toothpaste twice a day when brushing their teeth.
