What to expect when you need a tooth extraction

While we will do everything in our power to manage troublesome teeth and fix broken or damaged teeth with fillings, crowns, and other treatments, there are times when the only option for your wellbeing and comfort is to have a tooth extraction.

When is a tooth extraction required?

There can be many different reasons a tooth extraction is needed, though some of the more common reasons are:

  • Broken or damaged teeth that are beyond repair.
  • Extra teeth that are blocking teeth from coming in.
  • A tooth that will prevent the movement needed for braces.
  • Baby teeth that have not fallen out in time to allow adult teeth to come through.
  • Infected teeth that are creating pain and discomfort.
  • Wisdom teeth that are too big, decayed, causing pain or are infected.

What is the procedure for tooth extraction?

In most cases, the extraction is carried out in our dental rooms. Before the procedure, your dentist will take an x-ray of the area to determine the best way to remove the tooth and will then explain what you can expect. You will then receive a local anaesthetic to the area to make sure you are comfortable. Throughout the process we will continue to check in with you, update you on the progress and calm any fears or concerns you may have.

What about tooth extraction aftercare?

The care doesn’t stop once you walk out the door. We provide you with the best aftercare to make sure you recover as quickly and painlessly as possible. After the procedure is complete, your dentist will give you detailed instructions on what to do and expect in the days after your tooth extraction. Depending on the reason for the tooth extraction and the condition of the tooth, you may also be prescribed antibiotics.

Before or after the procedure, you can ask as many questions as you like. You are also welcome to contact the practice on (02) 4822 8224 after your procedure if you have any further questions or concerns.
